Caving

Caving

Caving will return in 2022!

Explore underground ecosystems and discover a labyrinth of breathtaking scenery!

This event is run by the Rover Speleological Society, a group of experienced and qualified cavers who are all current or former Guides and Scouts. They often run trips with Girl Guides and are delighted to share their caving humour and skill with you!

It doesn't matter if you are a beginner, intermediate or experienced caver, caving is open to anyone who is ready for an adventure!

  • Send your ADM 27 or ADM 28 to [email protected]

    What to Bring:

    Camping -
  • NP charges a fee per car ($8 per 24hrs= $16 for weekend) payable in correct cash (labelled envelope with Driver name and car licence plate) to LIC when arriving, unless you have a NPWS Park pass.
  • Tent and Bedding - bring a warm sleeping bag (or two!) and woollen blankets. Good mattress layers are a must.
  • Warm clothes, rain gear and a beanie. Temperatures can drop at night- some years we have hit -1deg. The caves are approx 15deg and the days are cool. Hot showers available at campsite.
  • Separate campsite shoes to what you are caving in.

    BYO all Food -
  • High energy snacks to take caving. Your hands will be dirty, so non-crumbly food you can eat straight from the packet is best.
  • Breakfasts and lunches that are easy to pre-prepare. You may cave all day, have a lunch you can take with you.
  • High energy dinner. You will be tired in the evening so a pre-made nutritious meal that you just have to heat is the best option. A proper meal is a necessity to replenish energy for Sunday.
  • All cooking gear as individuals or Units.
  • Bring your mess kit and a camp chair.

    Drinking Water -
  • Drinking water is available on site from one tap, but it will be handy to bring a large container to keep filled on your camping site.

    BYO Cave Equipment -
  • Caving clothes: overalls are great, but old tracksuit pants and a long sleeved top are fine. Sneakers with good grip (volleys are brilliant!), they will get wet and muddy
  • Headlights: are a great addition to your personal gear for use on any camp. They are readily available and reasonably priced and can be found in any camping store, BBQs Galore, Big W and the like. It is essential you have three forms of light to take into a cave. A head torch, spare torch with spare batteries, candle and matches. Triple the number of batteries you think you need and ensure you have plenty in the sizes of all your torches! Torches will be on all day and night. It is a necessity that one torch is able to go on your helmet as your main light as hands need to be kept free... and we can always duct tape it on!
  • Gloves: Firm fitting with leather fronts. For caving and abseiling. Gardening ones are great.
  • Helmet: (with a chin strap) if you have one. A bike helmet is perfectly fine.
  • If you have your own abseiling gear and harness, please bring it!
  • A compact backpack is required and needs to contain the following:
  • Spare lights and batteries
  • Snacks and lunch
  • 2 filled water bottles to hold between them 1L minimum (one with a wide opening to use as emergency bathroom if needed, the other to be able to still drink water from)
  • Chap stick for your lips
  • You must have spare thermals, or leggings and long sleeve top, in case you get cold underground.
