Celebrating 100 years of empowering women and 100 more

22 April 2020

Starting in October 1920 at Government House, the first meeting was held by a small group of women who believed an organisation was needed to support girls and their future growth into women.

Empowering Future Women

We are continuing our commitment to shaping the leaders of tomorrow by ensuring we are providing the best support, tools and resources for girls and women.

Hundreds upon thousands of girls have been a part of Girl Guides NSW since it was first established in 1920. We have a century of experience in supporting young girls become the women of tomorrow. And whilst the world has changed, the need to support young girls helping them realise their potential—has not. We are empowering the women of the future; for they will not only impact their families, communities, and country—they will change the world.

Girl Guides NSW officially turns 100 this year! It is a great achievement for the organisation and for all who have been, and continue to be involved as Guides, volunteers and supporters. We’ll be celebrating this achievement with our entire community.

We recognise our past as it is why we are here today; our focus is on the future and what we can do to continue empowering future girls and women.

Our centenary design (pictured above) holistically represents our organisation. The design is an extension of the A Place To Grow campaign as this is a significant mark in our history. The use of the heart in the logo embraces the passion Guides, volunteers and the community share.

The centenary design continues our story by acknowledging the milestone, whilst celebrating the impact we all will have on the future generations of women.

Centenary Website

We are building a website dedicated to our centenary celebrations so it is easy for our Guiding community to connect with the centenary celebrations and engage with the activities we have planned over the next twelve months. It will also be an avenue to showcase Guiding to a broader audience.
Look out on our social media channels and emails for the site’s launch date. We want you to get involved by visiting the website and sharing the content.

We will be hosting a range of activities throughout the year to connect our community for this important milestone. We would like our entire community to celebrate from our Guides, volunteers, parents and community members in the city and our regional areas. We will be calling on everyone to get involved with the activities we have planned.

Sharing our future

To foster and encourage our Guides talent we are calling on everyone to share their hopes and dreams for the future in a creative way by writing a letter to their future self and producing an artwork. There are more details to come on this including the criteria; we will share these via email and our social media pages!

Telling our stories

We want girls and volunteers to share some of their most memorable Guiding moments with us. There are so many stories to be told and we can’t wait to hear and share them with our wider community. We will be asking for your participation soon so stay connected with our social pages as well as our emails.

Showcasing our community

We will be creating unique ways to celebrate and showcase Guiding across the state. We want to see all of your photos from over the years so we can make one very special piece of artwork which represents our entire Guiding community. Keep an eye out in your inbox as we will be sending more details very soon!

This will be a year of celebrations for our community with plenty of activities planned for both Guides and volunteers. We cannot wait to see you be a part of each of these, so get involved on our social media pages, the centenary website and watch out for emails from Guide House.

Our official hashtag for the centenary celebrations is #GuidesNSW100years. Please use this in all your social media posts for the year so we can see how you, your Units and communities celebrate this momentous milestone!
