Yesterday was Harmony Day, a term we use in Australia to mark the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Many of us will be wearing orange across the week in support of the efforts to recognise the importance of diversity and social inclusion and promote community cohesion and peace. It is a day to focus on multiculturalism and anti-racism. Australia is a melting pot of cultures and as we reflect on what it means in our Promise to serve Australia and our community, each of us has a role to play in increasing inclusiveness and belonging. While many schools and workplaces will celebrate and recognise the day and week with activities, I’d encourage you to continue these important conversations in Guiding, around social justice and the role each of us can play in making a difference – for a better world.
When I think about our incredible Guiding community and the spirit of Harmony Day, I think about the opportunity to reach new communities and engage more girls and young women with the important and relevant purpose of Girl Guides. What might it take for us to look wide and look wider still? What can we do to encourage even greater diversity in our Guiding community, and better reflect the diverse and multicultural Australia in which we all live.
Our Membership is vastly spread across NSW, ACT & NT and we only reach a small segment of the potential number of girls and young women. What might we do more of, or less of, or do differently to help us reach new communities who may not know about Girl Guides? And how might we better position Girl Guiding as a building block in community cohesion? |

Regatta Wrap Up |
|
What a Regatta! We had over 235 Members attend this year for a weekend of incredible fun and adventure. There were water and land races, nightly campfires, and buckets of laughter and inspired costumes to boot-making for an incredible weekend at the wonderful location of Myuna Bay, NSW, home to the (correction*) Awabakal people.
Thank you to the Regatta Leadership Team who organised this year’s event, your hard work and dedication does not go unnoticed. I applaud you for banding together, under the lead of Rachael Hatton (Leader in Charge) to make this incredible weekend possible. Bravo!
A few words that summed up Regatta 2023 for Members: Friendship, fun, water, crazy, incredible! |
