Last week we celebrated National Volunteer Week. What a week! Thank you to everyone for the incredible efforts you make every day to create an impact in the lives of girls and young women. You are the change makers!
With our AGM held over the weekend, we presented 2022 in review, while centring ourselves on our Mission. Volunteers are our lifeblood and as a volunteer-led organisation, we know the important role each of you play in our community.
Prior to National Volunteers Week, we also marked the Coronation of Their Majesties, The King and Queen, and several of our Members were able to join other community change makers at a BBQ at Government House in Canberra.
Our communities are rich tapestries and the way we lend a hand strengthens the fabric of our nation. Thank you!
I also want to acknowledge tomorrow as the beginning of Red Pride Week and the countdown to Menstrual Hygiene Day on Sunday 28 May. Menstruation is a reality for so many girls and young women. Unfortunately, stigma and stereotyping create barriers for girls and young women when they menstruate – many girls can’t go to school, or participate in their communities! WAGGGS is joining hands with many to recognise these issues and take action! |

Celebrating our Change Makers |
|
Did you feel the wave of gratitude make its way through our community last week?
Volunteers thanked fellow volunteers, words of gratitude were shared, and gestures of kindness shown. There was a sense of appreciation in the air during National Volunteer Week 2023 and it was incredible to see and feel!
This year’s theme is The Change Makers. Volunteers are change makers in every sense of the word. The impact they have on girls and young women is real and tangible. Their influence as positive role models has proven impact on the confidence of our next generation of female leaders. This is integral to an equal and equitable future.
To all our volunteers, our Change Makers, thank you. |

Annual General Meeting 2023 |
|
Thank you to all those who attended, online and virtually, the 2023 Annual General Meeting. At the AGM, I presented the 2022 Annual Report and Anneliese Rothe from the Youth Advisory Committee delivered an exceptional address on meaningful youth participation and the importance of delivering for young people. |

Menstrual Hygiene & Red Pride Week |
|
Menstrual Hygiene Day is 28 May and during 24-28 May, WAGGGS is celebrating Red Pride Week, raising awareness to issues that affect girls and young women when they menstruate. The global theme is #WeAreCommitteed to #RedPride
You can get involved in the campaign and help break down stigma around menstruation by heading to the WAGGGS website. Learn more through the Menstrual Hygiene Day Activities and read the inspiring stories of fellow Girl Guides as they encourage you to take action! |

National Uniform Update |
|
New, sustainable changes are coming to the Girl Guides Australia uniform range!
Soon, GGiA uniform items will contain recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) material; a far more sustainable fabric that uses up to 53% less energy than virgin polyester to create! In addition, we will shift to recycled cardboard and less reliance on plastic packaging throughout the entire Noone supply chain.
This change to the GGA uniform production process is a timely shift to more environmentally sustainable practices. We expect the change to be phased in from 1 July 2023, and will initially be applied to the Girl Guide polo shirt and fleece jacket.
To meet rising costs in manufacturing, raw materials and freight costs, Noone has advised GGA of a marginal increase in wholesale and retail pricing of the Girl Guide uniform range. More communications regarding the marginal price increase, and what it means, will be sent in coming weeks. |

Great Guide Sleepover 2023 |
|
Planning for the largest event in the Guiding calendar is well underway! The Great Guide Sleepover will again take place in three locations! Alice Springs Desert Park, Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo and Taronga Zoo, Sydney!
Every year, the Great Guide Sleepover proves a memorable experience for Youth Members and Leaders alike. The opportunity to camp with hundreds of other Girl Guides, within earshot of the monkeys and lions, doesn’t come around all too often!
While we have told you to save the date for 26 August, one of our venues is no longer available and we are working hard to come up with alternatives. Stay tuned for a confirmed date and start thinking about ways to fundraise for GGS 2023 now!
Our Leaders in Charge (LICs) are: |
Letitia Baldwin – Alice Springs
Cassie Talbot – Dubbo
Bev Holmes & Leesa Abrams – Sydney
