I have returned to Sydney following an adventure to Alice Springs this weekend where I connected with so many Northern Territory Girl Guides at a fantastic state event! Last year, the inaugural NT event was held in Darwin, and this year it was in Alice Springs. How fortunate we are to be an organisation that covers one state and two territories and through our concentrated efforts we can provide even more opportunities for our Members.
I am thrilled to see our strong outdoor focus come to life as so many of us are still finding our feet in events and outdoor education post Covid. I joined many Girl Guides the weekend prior in Dubbo, and it has been wonderful getting to meet so many Members around NSW, ACT & NT in this way.
This weekend, the Governor of NSW and Mr Wilson will host us at Government House NSW where we will present a series of Achievement Awards to Youth Members and Olaves. I am looking forward to celebrating their accomplishments and taking stock of the impact we have made in recent times.
Keep your eyes peeled this week and next for further communications regarding a refresh to our Strategic Plan and other upcoming ways to learn more about what our Board is doing, who are our Directors and our focus on the future. |

Great Guide Sleepover – Alice Springs & Sydney! |
This past weekend, Alice Springs and Sydney hosted their annual Great Guide Sleepovers, and what a weekend it was! I was lucky enough to join in the fun in the NT at the Alice Springs Desert Park, among the malas and the crocodiles. This year was the first-time hosting in Alice and 36 girls along with 10 adults (Leaders, Unit Helpers and a few Support Group Members) attended. We had great time with animal encounters and activities, including a night stalk and bird show!
From all reports, GGS Sydney was an enormous win! Over 400 girls descended on Taronga Zoo’s Concert Lawn for an incredible night of Guiding fun. The backdrop to this night – Sydney’s beautiful harbour – served as an invaluable reminder of the wonderful experiences girls that are Girl Guides get to have, and the venues us Adults get to attend too.
Congratulations to each of the Sleepover Event Leadership Teams for their amazing efforts to make these events a roaring success! |

Whatever happened to adventure at Girl Guides? |
Girl Guides offers an array of adventurous activities, and we know adventure and outdoor education are at the heart of what we do. There is a recurrent misconception Girl Guides is primarily just about ‘domestic’ activities like sewing, cooking, and being a good hostess. This couldn’t be further from the truth!
Girl Guides offers so many opportunities to experience adventure and try new activities – camping, canoeing, canyoning, the list is long!
Are you interested in helping change this brand perception and boost community awareness? Let’s spread the word to influence change and encourage others to recognise the awesome adventures you can have in Guiding! |

ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science |
Girl Guides NSW, ACT & NT’s ACT & SE NSW Region hosted an aweSTEM girls and women in science event at the ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science this past weekend called greenlight4girls.
greenlight4girls (g4g) is an international organisation headquartered in Belgium committed to inspiring and encouraging girls of all ages and backgrounds to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) by not only introducing them to the world of STEM but also inspiring them through interactive events around the globe, crafting hands-on workshops that deliver experiential learning, and connecting girls with inspiring role models in STEM professions. |
Spearheaded by Deputy State Commissioner Michelle Kothe, Girl Guides NSW, ACT & NT has partnered with g4g for almost a decade—the NGO’s mission is in perfect alignment with the Girl Guides’ and the partnership helps us ensure we are relevant to girls and young women.
At this year’s free g4g event we had 120+ girls and 30 adult volunteers. The girls had the opportunity to hear short talks from a diverse group of seven inspirational women in STEM fields and participated in 4 workshops across the day covering fields including Maths, Biology (DNA), Engineering and Physics/Astronomy.
Each group activity was named after an inspirational woman scientist and the girls made posters about these women. At g4g and Girl Guides we provide real world and historical role models for girls interested in STEM. |
