State Commissioner, Emily Milton Smith is away from her desk on some personal leave and the Deputy State Commissioner Team is pleased to present you with this week’s newsletter. Please find a number of important updates below. Share them with your Units and networks!
Gang Show!
For over 50 years, Guides and Scouts have been coming together for Gang Show; a wonderful intersection of musical theatre, comedy, dramatic greatness, and camaraderie!
Many Guides were involved in this year’s huge event. Pictured below (left) is Deputy State Commissioner, Kerrey Williams with Margo Hebbard of Northern Sydney Region at the Cumberland Gang Show. An amazing tradition that still holds strong.
See also an image of the Girl Guides involved in the Hornsby Gang Show, including Deputy SC Shaylah McClymont and some Girl Guides from Melbourne Gang Show.

NAIDOC Week 2022 |
|
Last week we celebrated NAIDOC Week! Every year, NAIDOC Week is a time of reflection, conversation and education. The 2022 NAIDOC theme, Get Up! Speak Up! Stand Up! is a timely reminder that stronger ties between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and broader Australia, won’t come without action. And action requires bravery.
We are so proud of our Guiding community for showing true bravery and leadership when it comes to building stronger connections with Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders. Our very own Member, Natalie Smith, wonderfully encapsulates this idea of connection in the artwork she produced for our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

PR and Marketing Update |
|
Girl Guides NSW, ACT & NT have been testing some ways we can increase the awareness of Girl Guides in all of our communities. In some areas we’ve taken over the airwaves, in others, there’s Guides on film! Tap here to read all about this, and more, take a sneak peak, or have a listen.
Once we have finished testing these promotional campaigns we will roll out for use in and by all Regions! Campaign questions? Email [email protected] or send us a Facebook message. |

Do you know about the State Travel Fund? |
|
Did you know there is a State Travel Fund available to all Members which subsidises up to 50 per cent of the cost to travel to events? This includes the Great Guide Sleepover.
As weekly costs for families continue to go up, it’s a trying time for us all. Please, if you need financial assistance to attend the Great Guide Sleepover this year, why not apply for the Fund?
Applying for the Fund
To apply for the Fund, please submit a request to Kim Sinclair Forbes ([email protected]) by Wednesday 20 July.
Spread the word!
Please share information about the Fund with your Units. Many of our Members do not know this Fund is here to help them. If you know a girl who’d love to go to the Sleepover, but travel expenses are a hurdle, share the below article with them. |

With the Great Guide Sleepover hosted in three locations this year, have you thought about venturing to the Territory? The Territory event is accepting Guides aged from 7 years, while the events at Taronga and Dubbo will continue with the minimum eligible age of 10 years.
The reason for this difference is to account for the naturally lower demand for tickets in the NT, as attendance will require more travel and commitment from our Members. We want to ensure the NT Sleepover can be an equally wonderful experience!
Why should you consider the NT?
|
|
- Guides aged 7+ are welcome! Take your Pre Junior Guides
- Value for money - approximate prices for an equivalent trip, with accommodation at a campsite and zoo entry for two days with food included, equates to $225. You're saving over $170!
- Darwin is much warmer than Sydney or Dubbo when you're sleeping under the stars in August
- A trip to the NT that's all planned for you!
