Dear {#party.Informal},
Last week we celebrated International Day of the Girl. How did you mark this day? This is an important day to take stock of what has been achieved for girls’ rights, and to take note of what more needs to be done to ensure girls can live freely and thrive. A recent report by the United Nations (UN Women & UN DESA) estimates it will take up to 286 years to achieve gender equality at the current pace of change. Girls continue to live in a world with widespread gender inequality and there is much to do to close the inequality gap.
Girl Guiding is an authority on girls and young women, and we have an important collective voice on issues affecting girls and how Girl Guiding empowers girls and builds resilience. Shaylah McClymont, Deputy State Commissioner delivered an address to Sydney Water on the important role Girl Guiding plays to empower girls and young women. What a brilliant way to share our Mission with the community and encourage relationship building. |

Bicentenary of the NSW Legislative Council |
|
On 18 October, the NSW Legislative Council launched their Bicentenary. Did you know the NSW Legislative Council is Australia’s first and oldest legislative body? The Bicentenary program will be a chance to engage all people in NSW with this institution and the role it plays in determining policy and shaping people’s lives.
It has long been my view that citizenship, leadership and outdoor education are central to Girl Guiding. The Bicentenary of the NSW Legislative Council offers an opportunity to connect Girl Guides with this institution and raise up the profile of Girl Guiding – as responsible citizens who advocate for change and take action for a better world every day.
A special Young Leaders program will be launched as a key initiative of the Bicentenary. Girl Guides NSW, ACT & NT will select 2 young leaders from our NSW Membership for a once in a lifetime opportunity, joining with a few other select youth organisations. Amongst many exciting official events including conferences and exhibitions, there will also be a roadshow with holiday programs across NSW to increase civics literacy for young people.
Stay tuned to learn more, but I am thrilled about what this connection with the Bicentenary can offer for Girl Guiding in NSW, and beyond! |

Cyber Safety and Digital Literacy |
|
With cyber-attacks becoming increasingly prevalent (you would have heard about the Optus attack in recent weeks) we want to ensure all Members are equipped with the tools they need to be cyber safe.
Please be aware of a potential romance scam that has been appearing on the GGA Facebook page. Specifically, if you’re a Facebook page or group admin, please read the following information regarding the scam and be conscious of moderating comments and notifications on your group or page. |
|
The Scam |
When an apparent legitimate GGiA member posts a comment (the commenter) on the GGA Facebook Page, a ‘gentleman’ tags the commenter complimenting them and suggests the two become friends. As the commenter was tagged, they will automatically be notified of the message.
The ‘gentleman’s’ Facebook Page presents photos of a single male. We also note that one example had a page which was established in 2014 thus making the Page appear more legitimate. |

Romance/Friendship Comments in Posts |
Comments tagging active GGA Facebook Followers has occurred on recent and historical posts.
