Right now I am in Rwanda attending the Women Deliver Conference where more than 6,300 delegates from 173 countries are convening to consider how we might achieve gender equality. Women Deliver has an origin in advocacy on women’s sexual health and reproductive rights, and it has evolved its focus to also reflect gender equity and equality outcomes, while also grappling with the disproportionate impact climate change has on women and girls.
The conference theme is “spaces, solidarity, solutions” and it has been inspiring to hear from so many incredible leaders, including the former Prime Minister of NZ, Helen Clark, and Malala!
The scale of the challenge is huge. At the current conference the Executive Director highlighted recent research indicating gender equality is now 286 years away! So many teenage girls and young women from around the world have shared their stories of resistance, disruption and dreaming of a fairer world.
There are so many takeaways and two that are resonating with me as I sit to write this.
First, the need to shift our mindset from scarcity to abundance. There is huge challenge ahead of us, but deep power and possibility, with changemakers who collaborate and celebrate the progress made. There is so much hope, and more capital, and people, and opportunity than ever before to raise issues to the agenda and be the change the world needs. If we shift our thinking to start from a place of abundance, what might this mean in the context of Girl Guides and for our approach to delivering on our Mission?
Second, the focus on meaningful youth participation and intergenerational partnership, and how this necessitates shifting and sharing power. In Guiding, our foundation of girl-led provides this, and we have made great strides in improving the meaningful participation of young women in decision making over the recent years. Yet, the focus at Women Deliver invites questions about how might we do this better, and reckon with what it truly means to let girls and young women lead.
I am looking forward to hearing so many new perspectives and bringing back key learnings.
In July we also recognise Plastic Free July. Making choices for a better world. Our planet requires us to reduce, reuse, recycle and restore. The causes of gender equality and environmental action are closely linked and the role of women’s and girls leadership is not to be understated.
