Dear Member,
For some of us, school holidays have already commenced! I hope each of you take the time to rest and reconnect with your loved ones.
The last few weeks have shown us the pandemic is truly not yet over, and with natural disasters impacting us closer to home, particularly across NSW, compassion is more important than ever.
In Guiding, with the return to in-person events and several larger events on the horizon, it is important we take stock of what we have achieved (living through a pandemic and continuing to change lives!) and ground ourselves so we can realign with our core purpose.
There is a lot on for everyone right now, and rest is such an important way to use your time and abilities wisely. There is also a lot in which to look forward.

Help us measure our impact! |
|
Have you already completed the Social Impact Survey? If so, thank you! This helps us measure the impact Guiding has on girls and young women. The survey adds to our evidence base of proving the impact we make on girls and young women. It gives us real data. This helps us engage better with different stakeholders including funders and families.
The Member take-up has been fantastic. Young girls aged 8 – 12, and Members over the age of 31 are the most responsive age brackets. I am delighted to see this amount of engagement from some of our youngest and more experienced Members.
Members aged 13 – 30 have showed the least number of completions. We want to better understand the experiences of Members aged 13 – 30 so it is important more take part. Please encourage Members to complete the survey. You could organise a group session to each fill out the survey and discuss your experiences afterwards. |

Youth organisations are more important than ever before |
|
The NSW Strategic Plan for Children and Young People 2022-2024 is now available. This Plan is produced by the Advocate for Children and Young People, which is an independent statutory office reporting to the NSW Parliament.
More than 41,000 children and young people were consulted and engaged in the Plan. It highlights the increasing importance of co-curricular activities like Girl Guides that allow young people to connect, feel safe, and prepare for the future – all while having fun and engaging with a community beyond their family and school network.
Youth organisations are more relevant than ever before. Young people are looking for a place to belong and a place to grow. This is exactly what Guiding offers and so much more!
Below are some interesting findings to spotlight: |
|
- 71% of children and young people said they felt hopeful about their future in general, however there are some groups who are consistently less hopeful, such as LGBTQIA+ young people.
- Children and young people frequently mention the need for schools to teach practical life skills in addition to the current curriculum.
- Children and young people are interested and eager to engage with their broader community but do not always know how to connect. They want more opportunities to participate in events and activities, which bring children and young people together and foster connectedness and community cohesion.
- Some young people said they wanted more funding for local sports clubs so they can run more youth-focused programs, whilst other young people wanted more activities (other than sport) such as music, art, cooking, school holiday programs and school camps.
- Young people in regional areas reported there were often lots of sporting activities available but not as many other options.
