You will have recently received communications from Julia Becker, Inclusion Lead, as it is NAIDOC Week between 2–9 July - an occasion where we celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Australia’s reconciliation journey is an ongoing project and key calendar milestones are important mechanisms to focus attention and resources.
NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for everyone to learn more about First Nations cultures and celebrate the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. I often reflect particularly on the incredible contributions of First Nations women to our communities at large and especially pay my deep respects to them.
As an intergenerational movement, we know the important role women play as keepers of the flame, sharing stories and stewarding our heritage. NAIDOC Week’s theme this year of #ForTheElders represents this in many ways. Read more here.
And to all our Northern Territorian Members, Happy Territory Day! What a wonderful occasion to celebrate all things Northern Territory.
On a personal note, this week is one of reflection and solace for me as on Friday I mark the first anniversary of the death of my mother, Leah Milton, who died last year following a short-lived cancer battle. My mother was a Girl Guide when she was little and inspired so much in me. As I take stock of the year that has been, and reflect on my hope for the future, I have found myself often thinking of her. I share this with you because sometimes times can be tough. But we are tough as well and how beautiful it is to hold love and space in our hearts for the people who join us on our journey in life and remain steadfast with us even in death. The grief remains – we just grow larger around it - and we pay that love forward into the world as a testament of legacy. May we all be gentle on ourselves and each other.
