As we close out Plastic Free July, I hope we all think about the habits we will take forward to make choices for a better world. There are many simple changes we can make to reduce our footprint. Such as reducing waste and adopting recycling practices in our Units and while on camp.
Last weekend, Kerrey and I headed to Tamworth to camp at the Burraburro Campsite for a special farewell event for NorthWest Inland Region. What a great opportunity to get outdoors and for many of the girls in attendance, it was their first time on camp! We sang songs and made memories!
I was delighted to present Good Service Awards to Helen Leamon, Region Manager and Stephanie Friel, Assistant Region Manager, along with Amanda Cooper for their steady leadership and significant contributions to Guiding. My sincere thanks to them, as well as all the Adult Members (both current and past) of this Region. Every single person’s contribution is valuable and valued.
Helen reminded everyone that Girl Guiding is a movement, and as a movement, we adapt and change to ensure we remain ever relevant for girls of today and tomorrow – as we all navigate a dynamic and increasingly complex world. Her reflections were powerful. We are ever evolving. Making new friends, keeping the old. Our resilience and adaptability are core characteristics of Guiding. And as the Districts of NorthWest Inland embark on a new journey in this next chapter, we know everyone in our Guiding community will do their best to focus on our Mission and support these transitions.
In the spirit of evolution, I am pleased to welcome new leadership to our organisation and to Girl Guiding in Australia. New leadership brings an opportunity to refresh and reorient, and remain true to our Mission in new ways. Read along to learn more.

Queen's Guide Award |
|
The Queen’s Guide Award is the peak achievement award for Youth Members aged 14-17 years old. The syllabus for the Queen’s Guide Award was last reshaped as part of the introduction of the Australian Guiding Program more than 20 years ago. In 2020 a review of the Award occurred to improve the relevancy of the syllabus for today’s girls.
A refreshed syllabus was piloted with girls from all SGGOs over the last 9 months, with feedback incorporated from broad consultation with a variety of stakeholders.
Girl Guides Australia is excited to announce the syllabus for the Queen’s Guide Award will be changing in 2023. The syllabus is in the final stages of review. The updated syllabus lifts the Queen’s Guide Award and the Gold Endeavour to today’s girls; encourages the recognition of challenges completed external to Girl Guiding and the language has been updated to be more relevant in the community.
There will be a transition period for completion for those Members working on the current Queen’s Guide Award syllabus and the opportunity to cross credit for those who would like to move to the new syllabus.
